Japan

Ready to Experience the Land of the Rising Sun?

Why Travelers Fall in Love with Japan

Japan is a destination of beautiful contrasts. Centuries-old temples stand quietly among modern cities, peaceful gardens sit just beyond neon-lit streets, and ancient traditions remain an important part of everyday life.

One day might begin among the energy of Tokyo and end with dinner in a tiny neighborhood restaurant. Another might find you walking beneath Kyoto's torii gates, soaking in a mountain onsen, riding one of Japan's remarkably efficient bullet trains, or watching Mount Fuji appear through the clouds.

Travelers come to Japan expecting something different.

What they often discover is a country that feels welcoming, thoughtful, beautiful, and endlessly fascinating.

Japan doesn't simply invite you to visit—it invites you to notice the details.

Best Time to Visit

🌸 March–May

Spring is one of Japan's most celebrated seasons, particularly during cherry blossom season.

Exact bloom dates vary by destination and year, but late March into April is traditionally the most sought-after period in destinations such as Tokyo and Kyoto.

Beautiful weather and blossoms also mean larger crowds and higher demand, so planning well in advance is important.

☀️ June–August

Summer is warm and humid throughout much of Japan, but it also brings colorful festivals, fireworks, mountain adventures, and lush landscapes.

Travelers looking for cooler temperatures might consider Japan's northern regions or higher elevations.

🍁 September–November

Autumn is another spectacular time to visit. Comfortable temperatures and brilliant fall foliage make October and November particularly appealing for sightseeing.

Kyoto's temples and gardens can be especially beautiful surrounded by autumn color.

❄️ December–February

Winter offers a completely different Japan.

Cities tend to be less crowded, snow transforms mountain regions, hot springs become particularly inviting, and northern Japan offers exceptional winter scenery and skiing.

Fernweh Favorite: Consider April, May, October, or November for a beautiful combination of scenery and comfortable sightseeing weather.

Experiences You Won't Forget

  • Experience the energy and neighborhoods of Tokyo
  • Stay overnight in a traditional Japanese ryokan
  • Relax in a Japanese onsen
  • Travel across the country aboard a Shinkansen bullet train
  • Experience Japan beneath the cherry blossoms or brilliant autumn leaves
  • Visit the temples and traditional neighborhoods of Kyoto

Planning Tips

  • Plan 9–12 months ahead if cherry blossom season is a priority, particularly for sought-after accommodations and experiences.
  • Don't try to see the entire country in one trip. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka make an excellent introduction, but adding a smaller destination can make the journey feel much more personal.
  • Japan's rail system makes traveling between major destinations remarkably convenient.
  • Pack light when possible. Navigating train stations and transferring between cities is much easier with manageable luggage.
  • Consider luggage-forwarding services when moving between destinations.
  • Spend at least one night in a traditional ryokan for a completely different experience.
  • Build free time into Tokyo and Kyoto. Some of Japan's best discoveries happen simply by wandering into a neighborhood you hadn't planned to visit.
  • Remember that Japan changes dramatically with the seasons, so when you travel can shape the entire experience.
